on-board battery charger

I am considering buying an on-board battery charger. I have a 24 volt 82 lb. thrust Motorguide bowmount with 29 series AGM batteries. Are the on-board chargers worth the money? I live in Maryland and was also wondering if it hurts the batteries to leave them in the boat during the winter. I fish all winter long about twice per month. Thank you to everyone who responds. This board has been a great help.
