Newbie has a few questions...[ Aluminum Boat and Repair Board ] [ Boat Motor Repair Board ] Posted by Rat (64.154.26.248) on November 21, 2004 at 07:24:34: Okay, I have read a few of the past threads, some very interesting stuff. I just bought a brand new (almost) 12 Alu. jon boat. It came with a 5 HP engine (pre '85) which is a POS. I want to buy a new engine for my girl, and she is rated for an 8 HP. Here is my first question: 1) How many people use a little higher than rated HP, like a 9.9 on this boat, on their boats. Here is the reason I ask this. I just got rid of another 12' Jon, that I had a 9.9 HP (pre '85) engine on, and I loved that thing. It porposed bad, bit a little weight up front was all that was needed. But I had no major issues with it. Question B: I read about getting the anti-cavitation plate (what the heck is this?) even with the bottom of the boat. I think I understand why (less friction and all that)and the anti-venting something or other, which I think is the same thing? I just need a little splaining on this procedure.:) Also I drive right handed, and sometimes, on longer runs, my shoulder starts to ache because I am all twisted and contorted around. Is there an engine that has the handle on the OTHER side? I just can't drive left handed, it freaks me out too much. Thanks ya'll
