Jerry,
I have three batteries and use a ChargeTec onboard charger and it's great. I keep it plugged in 24 hours a day. The only problem I've had with it is in the summer, if I run the batteries way down, it gets a little hot and shuts down because it's under my console and doesn't get much airflow. I remedied that with putting a small fan in front of it while it's charging.

As far as winter battery storage, I'm really not sure how cold a temperature a battery can take. I think the worst thing for a battery is leaving it uncharged. You may want to contact a battery company and ask them about winter storage.
