If you want the best look into a product called Por-15. I've heard nothing but good about this product but have yet to use it myself. Most of the guys using it are involved in street rods and other restorations where they're salvaging steel that has seen better days.
I've had good luck using the cheap oil-based "tractor and implement" paint at a local home center but I'm sure it's not as good as Por15.
I'm about ready to get after my trailer and am still undecided myself. I'd like to use Por15, but it's fairly expensive and I'm doing my project on the cheap so I'll probably end up using something else.
I'm about ready to do the same with my trailer.
