Unless the rear of your motor is getting submerged past the lower exhaust ports, you have surmised correctly.

You can validate by doing a compression test on all cylinders. If the lower one (or 2) has significantly less compression than the others, then it's likely to be the head gasket. A leak-down test would be more definitive.
