Sounds like a worn shift dog (Clutch dog).
If it seems like it is striking something or like it is slipping and grabbing.
The dog is a normal wear part and will wear prematurely if the motor is running too fast when shifted or is jammed into gear too agressively.Should idle as low possible and shift crisply.Neither jamming it into gear nor dragging it into gear too slowly. You could check that the cable is moving it into gear properly.Sometimes if you unhook the cable and shift by hand it will shift correctly if it isn`t the dog and you can adjust the cable to improve the shift throw.
I don`t know how the Force is laid out but the shift dog on most motors is on the prop shaft and is a relatively easy repair for a amateur mechanic with a manual.Parts for your gearcase may be similar to Merc.
