The important thing is that the points are fully open at .020 at the highest point of the cam.
This times the ignition. Ignition advance is not adjustable.There is a carb sync. adjustment that depends on the serial number.Again be sure the flywheel keyway,crankshaft keyway and the key are in good shape any wear or damage will throw off the timing relationship between the points and the flywheel magnets and the coil armature.
NAPA auto parts has a 600 page marine products catalog that includes manuals.Unfortunately some branches don`t have a clue about the catalog.
I have an old Abos aftermarket manual that covers many brands below 30 hp.It has served me well.There are other manuals that will work as well.Try Johns Old Mercury Web Site there is an excellent forum much info and great links including reprint factory manuals.
