If the transom is sturdy & in good condition it shouldn't have any trouble holding a newer 50 hp.
All the motors have been rated at the prop since about the mid-80's anyway. You'd see at most probably 15 percent diff from prop rated to crank rated, so a 50 HP rating nowadays would be somewhere equivalent to no more (on the outside) than 58 HP. Not enough to make any substantive difference.
Rather than the rated HP, I'd worry more about weight, for example if you were to mount a 4-stroke motor. Compare weights between 2-strokes and 4-strokes, at the 50 hp level the diff probably is not that significant, however on higher HP motors it can be.
If you have any doubt, a 45 HP motor is probably very close to the performance of an older 50.
