Did you do the circulating water pump on the engine, or the rubber impeller in the lower unit?

You definitely should do the impeller since you're having overheating issues. The lower unit just unbolts; watch out for a couple of O-rings for oil passages, and there's should be a hidden bolt underneat the trim tab that needs to come off too.

Also check the thermostat.

Very common to see plugged up exhaust elbow or manifold, so if all else fails you may need to pull them and check for obstructions. A buddy of mine had a 120 Mercruiser and the exhaust man got real hot; pulled out the elbow, and it was at least 75 percent plugged. He 'boiled' it out with a solution of Draino; the lye dissolves rust.
