I would try very hard to find a 2 stroke.I don`t find fault with the 4 strokes as far as being quality motors with lots of good features.
I feel they have just too many moving parts that with age will add to maintenance costs and problems.Evinrude etecs are available in smaller engines now, maybe in the 35 hp range.I`m sure other companies have similar technologies coming along as well. Go with the most hp you can afford. You don`t usually see a boater say "I wish I had less hp."If your boat is rated at 50 hp don`t worry about going with a 50 as long as your transom is in good shape. My barebones 18ft Crestliner utility is rated for 55.I run a 88 50 and it flies.I usually run at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle and it works great.I have pushed some amazing loads at planing speeds with no problems.
And I think it gets great mileage as well.
