Did you blow air thru the water tube? I just did a 5.5 that had the grommet swollen shut and it was blocking water flow from the pump to the powerhead.
Sure sounds like it's running hot though, that motor doesn't even have a thermostat so it shouldn't get that hot at all.
Be sure the aluminum pump body isn't scored on the walls, and carefully check the flat inner upper surface as there can be impeller wear marks that will reduce efficiency.
There is a new replacement pump available with a modern, plastic pump body, stainless cup insert and a more efficient impeller. This pump kit pumps a lot more water than the original and I'd highly recommend it if there's any wear in the old pump.
You should be getting quite a large flow of water out of the exhaust relief at the upper part of the exhaust tower, when the motor is running. That's the best indication of water flow thru the powerhead.
