Before you spring for a replacement coil, make sure the magnets are clean, sand them lightly if needed. Also be sure that the ground wire is in place, that the spark plug is new and that the spark plug wire isn't cracked and grounding. Clean or replace the points and replace the condensor. If its getting any spark at all, usually these things will brighten it up!

But if you determine a new coil is needed, If it's truly a 71, then the power head is a techumseh. The exact same powerhead was used on many many many lawnmowers, weedeaters, and other stuff for years. Take the old coil off, take it to a lawn mower shop. Tell them it's off an old mower, and ask for a replacement cost. If you're lucky they'll have a used one in the back they'll let you have for a few bucks. (The reason for not telling them it's a boat motor is, most repair shops are scared of boat motors and feel that they are so specialized that they won't even look at them.)
