The shift wires come up through a hole in the midsection on the right side of the powerhead. They are in a common sheath and have knife connectors with a rubber insulator over each one.. Slide back the rubber and disconnect the knife connectors. Sometimes its good to work a little WD40 around where the shift cable goes through the hole before trying to pull it down with the lower unit. Hint: do yourself a favor and tie a piece of string to the cable before you pull it out so you will have it to pull the cable back through the hole when you reinstall the lower unit.
