I have to say it has probably been 40 years since I changed a pin.But it was on a motor very similar to yours. Is it a plastic or metal nut.If metal you could snug it NOT TIGHT.and if you can't get the cotterpin in back it off to line it up.My old 40 had a plastic nut and and no threads the pin lasted 20 plus years.Be sure the pin is the right size not just a piece of brass and there isn't too much slop in the hub or shaft.
Be sure the idle is correct as shifting at too high an idle will cause premature wear of the shift dog and put extra strain on the pin.Not
too much but more than normal.
