The motor must be run with a battery or damage will occur to the charging system.It sure seems to me that you could hook up a regular battery.
And if you want to try a garden tractor battery it surely will do the job.
It appears in my aftermarket service manual that there is a vent screw above the antivent plate and a drain screw near the bottom of the gearcase.With the motor upright and a bucket to catch the gear lube remove the drain and vent.To refill fill through the drain hole until it comes out the vent hole
replace the vent screw and then the drain screw.
There are kits to aid in this job.Though I've done it many times with just a tube of outboard gear lube.If the lube appears milky it indicates a need for new seals.Some folks do run if the seals aren't to bad and change the lube more often.
