Hello, on a 1968 Evinrude 18hp. I replaced the original fuel pump ( about $50-60 for a new one) with a universal mikuni vacuum powered pump like for a 4 wheeler or snowmobile. I tapped threads into the vacuum plate where the original got its vacuum and installed a hose nipple and a little adapting of the hose sizes and for less than $20 it runs like new. A fuel pump off a 4 wheeler ( like Polaris ) or jet ski will work fine if you have the time to plumb it in and don't mind a piece of non original equipment being there. Hope this might help if you don't find where to put the spring and don't want to pay the high price of a new stock piece. John
