Can't help on the year, but they were all pretty much the same, until they came out with the solid state ignition.

Some things to look for: The magnets on the fly wheel, are they clean, if not sand them lightly. Same thing with the coil. Check to make sure the plug isn't dead. Simply replace with a new one, you need it anyway. Be sure that there is not a loose wire making a ground somewhere. Also be sure that there are no scuffs in the spark plug wire itself. If kill switch equipped, be sure the switch is working properly, you can do this with a battery powered "open circuit tester" a test lamp. Also check to be sure that the flywheel hasn't sheared or partialy sheared the key. Ther's not much that can go wrong with the coil itself, but sometimes they develop a short, just make sure it's connections are good and clean.

If none of this produces spark and you're convinced it's the black box, simply remove the box, take it to a tecumseh engine repair shop. Tell them it's off an old mower, they may have one. If you tell them it's off a boat motor they will turn up their nose, and attempt to send you away claiming they can't help.
