This is a '67 motor, right? Looked it up in my OMC microfiche and it's built the same as the older ones, i.e., no needles, ball bearings, or roller bearings at all in the powerhead. Babbitt or bushed.
So, I certainly wouldn't run it at 50:1, it needs more oil. 16:1 is quite rich, especially with today's oils. 24:1 is probably a more reasonable mix and it won't smoke so badly if you use a premium mfr's oil or a good aftermarket such as Penzoil Synthetic Blend.
I'm running the Penzoil in my Ancient 5 HP See Bee and even at 16:1 mix it doesn't leave horrible clouds of smoke. No problems fouling plugs, either, the motor runs like new. Plus the Penzoil smells really good, like Gearhead Perfume!!!
If you're concerned about carbon buildup, give it the 'soaking' treatment with Seafoam, OMC Engine Tuner, Merc Power Tune or equivalent once a season. You can use an occasional dose of Seafoam, OMC Carbon Guard, Yamaha Ring-Free, etc in the gas and this'll also help diminish deposits in the innards.
