The oil is probably coming from the crankcase through the lower crankcase seal. the oil that is in the gas as it enters the crankcase seperates as the oil is attracted to the hot metal components in order to lubricate prior to being cycled up the transfer ports to be burned. If the lower crankcase seal leaks then some of this oil is forced out past the seal and onto the driveshaft. this will appear as a charcoal greyish to milky grey oil/clumpy grease throigh the exaust port. If your engine is a thru hub exhaust you could be led to think it is from the lower unit. As the seal deteriorates the motor will run more erriaticly as if there is a carb problem that cannot be adjusted out.
