Hard to believe someone would run a 20 in. motor on a 15 in transom for 40 years?? Are you sure something wasn`t done to make it fit right.I`m pretty sure if it is a long shaft there is an obvious 5 in. extension in the lower unit. Also if it is a long shaft on a 15 in transom the antivent plate will be 5 inches below the bottom of the boat.If you can find parts it is a straight forward job. Remember you need to replace the drive shaft, shorten shift and water tube. The shift and water tube may just have extensions. I believe you just remove the extension on the housing as well. www.tcoutboard.com may have parts. You may want to look at a manual try the library if you don`t want to buy one.
