Changing Eska gear oil

I changed the oil out of the lower unit on a 1973 7hp eska this morning. Does anyone know if I should use oil or grease and what the capacity is? I used oil and it seemed to me that it only took a couple of ounces. The other question I have is should the unit be strait up and down when filling?
