You can see if it's affecting the points gap by (with the flywheel off), moving the mag plate fore-aft and side-to-side with a set of points open. If the mag plate bearing is excessively worn, you'll see the points gap closing and opening a bit. This will definitely cause erratic operation and likely the source of your noise. Shimming may work, otherwise you'd want to replace the mag plate. You may be able to find some brass shim stock at an auto parts store in lieu of the pop can trick. Try this old outboard forum, they may have a line on a good plate: http://www.aomci.org/askamember/ Another thing you might try is to adjust the coils inwards; if you can see rub marks on the coil's armatures that indicate the flywheel has been rubbing on them, the coils may be adjusted a bit too far outwards. To adjust a coil, loosen its (3) mounting screws and reposition. There is a special alignment tool which has its I.D. precisely machined, and placed over the coils automatically gives the proper spacing. Lacking that, align the outer (2)edges of the coil's laminated armature flush with the machined aluminum ledges on the mag plate. Usually that will keep things from rubbing and still allow the coils to be close enough to the flywheel magnets to work properly. If that doesn't do the trick, it's the mag plate itself.
