Piston damaged on Suzuki 140hp (1997)

Have got a 140hp Suzuki outboard and have just been informed that the top piston has been damaged due to salt water. Apparently all seals are OK and the only explanation I have been given is that salt water must have entered through the exhaust when a we took a wave over the back of the boat. Seems very odd to me. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?
