Lower unit oilite bearing replacement

My 18 hp Evinrude has oilite sintered bronze bearings in the lower unit housing that are worn out. The oilite bearing in the gear head is also worn out. The Evinrude manual says to buy a new housing. Aside from the cost of this option, I doubt that I could find these parts for this older motor. Is there anyone out there who has simply bored out the old oilite bearings and replaced them? Can the oilite bearings be replaced by roller or ball bearings just as easily? Is this a realistic option?
