Replacing the engine in a Starcraft Islander.

I just love but can't afford the new 22'Starcraft Islander. I was thinking I would buy a used 70's or 80's model and restore it and replace the engine if needed..
I know they use a 3.0L to 4.3L in the newer boats but because the hull is older and aluminum would it be unwise to use too much power?
If I had a chance to get a good deal on a marine engine before I got the boat I could just buy one that needed an engine. Do some motors not fit an Islander or are the fittings standard?
I know nothing about inboards.
