i have been working on one that sounds just like yours .mine is 54GG-9011 two cyl. ie you take the top off the float bowl you may see a pinhole ,it is to let air out when the float is rising.take the nut off the bottom of the bowl,take the screen filter out,stick a bolt up in the hole to hold the plunger up then push down on the cork float to set the level of gas. i hope this will help you
