If you do as Mr. Heller recommends beware that the drag components can fall out & get mixed up. If you're lucky there will still be a label on the bottom of the spool showing how to place these parts back. If not make note exactly how the parts are arranged. On the 403 the spool is supposed to unscrew by turning it clockwise as you face the reel frontally. It should also click against the drag when turned counterclockwise. However do not force it or you will likely break the C-clicker spring. Taking it apart by remvoing the screw also allows you to lube the internal thread that holds the spool on the shaft. There is also a taper below this, both can seize. Once the spool is off, by the screw method, you can use a wrench on the flats on the spindle, again clockwise, but be careful not to force it as you could break internal parts. Let penetrating lube work from both sides.
